If Christmas …

is just a day—
even a momentous day
in long-ago Bethlehem—
how can Christmas
be more than seasonal?

But if Christmas is a power
a timeless truth
an assurance of Immanuel
God with us
every moment

then the holy birth story
is our sign
our reminder
that the eternal Christ
is breaking through
materialism’s glitter and noise

silently shouting hosannas
of comfort and healing
in our hearts

and that is what we celebrate.
