How will I respond?

When the call goes out to labor and be wise,
How will I respond? Whose will shall I exercise?
When faced with a hungering or thundering crowd,
Before bread is apparent, will I say “Thanks” out loud?
When wrapped in grave clothes foot to face,
Will I “come forth” 1 to leave that dark place?
When desperate, alone, ashamed, and spent,
Will I arise to my Father, as a servant sent?
When sweetest friend seems far off or gone,
Will I pray to know that they go on?

Though the way seems dark, complex, or obscure,
I rejoice to have learned the universal Christ-cure:
To hold steadfastly to what I may not yet see,
Until what eternally is replaces what seems to be.
