I already AM

I looked for a sentence
That said the whole thing,
Economical words that surely would bring
Out the sense of it all,
Like Peter or Paul—or Jesus who said “Arise” to the dead.

Yes, that kind of brevity, shorn of false glory
Or wisdom or cleverness baked in a story,
A short phrase that says, “Now Love is right here”
Or “Life is ongoing” or
“God’s always near” . . .
Pure simple words, both eternal and true—
Words that are whole and forever brand-new.

So I looked into faiths, and I read all the writers,
But then realized I had not become wiser.
So, weary of searching for whole, perfect words,

And failing to get everything that I’d heard,
I prayed, “Father, please help me to understand
The essence of everything here in Your plan.”
And a voice, still and small and sweet as a lamb,
Whispered, “You’re trying too hard;
I already AM.”
