A foundation to build on

I had been brought up in Christian Science, gone to Sunday School, and joined The Mother Church, but by the time I turned 17 I decided that Christian Science was “old hat” and “for the birds.” I stopped going to church and left home, but a decade later I was living a less than ideal life. I was on the other side of the world from my homeland of Australia, in a very unhappy marriage, and my husband was facing bankruptcy.

I was on the other side of the world, in a very unhappy marriage, and my husband was facing bankruptcy.

At that time, my mum came to visit, and, while staying with us, asked me to drive her to a Christian Science lecture. I stayed and listened, and while I don’t remember exactly what the lecturer said, something stirred my thought. Mary Baker Eddy says in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind” (p. 162). I experienced this “change of base.” It became the turning point in my life.

I started attending church, reading the Christian Science Bible Lesson, and within two years I was in a healthier and happier state of mind. During this time I had also moved back to Australia and gotten divorced from my husband, and as I started my life as a single mum I knew I wanted to continue to build a solid spiritual foundation, so I took Primary class instruction in Christian Science.

After the class was over, someone asked me what it was like. The first thing that came to me was an image of Alice from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Remember when she opened that tiny door and crawled through? The doorway opened up, revealing a whole new and exciting world for her to discover.

For me, class instruction opened up a new and expanded world of ideas—tangible, demonstrable ideas—the absolute truth about God. To say it expanded my concept of God is an understatement. I was deeply impressed with the immensity and power of infinite Truth and Love revealed in the Bible and Science and Health—the laws of divine Principle. That made me so sure that God, good, is knowable now, and that the healing truth is right here with me, with everyone.

Soon after class instruction, I started a successful business. Later I moved to a high-profile career in the network television industry, happily remarried, and was able to start yet another successful business. All these changes were opened up by prayer and from realizing my completeness as God’s likeness. When family and business issues came up, they were solved when I saw that they were opportunities for divine Love to express itself. Physical problems, such as damaged ribs, a case of “frozen shoulder,” and other maladies, also disappeared as I prayed to know that, as Jesus taught, the kingdom of heaven, and nothing else, is within.

A few years ago I started to cherish the thought of helping others through prayer and am now a full-time Christian Science practitioner.
