No greater love

Christ Jesus said:
What you do for the least
of my brethren,
you do for me.

Welcome the stranger,
feed the hungry,
clothe the naked,
heal the sick.

Two thousand years on,
in this global village,
the message is the same.
What will we do today?

Moment by moment
and hour by hour
we cannot but know
the needs of a troubled world.

We can, if we are not careful,
be mesmerized by misery.
But Jesus said:
What you do, you do for me.

Just as feeling overwhelmed
robs us of our joy,
and hinders the progress
of those whom we would help,

So trusting in the power
of boundless Love
feeds the hungry,
rescues the homeless, heals the sick.

There is no greater love,
than to lay down a life —
set aside personal desires —
to pray for another.

So across the boundaries
which would separate,
I reach out to meet your need
knowing that this will help you most.

Confident in the promise
of the Comforter,
I know you are not alone,
and never can be.

Others will fulfill
this prayer for you,
will welcome you, rescue you,
clothe you, feed you.

Held in the very centre
of tender, all-embracing Love,
leaning on all that sustains,
you are God’s beloved child ...
always have been, always will be.
