Authentic heroism

Editors' Note: In a survey in the United States by a university professor, three hundred and forty students were asked to name their top five heroes.

SECOND THOUGHT

From The Boston Globe, June 4, 1985

A walk in the country

When I was in elementary school, I started taking guitar lessons at a home about a mile from the school.

To heaven with them

When people have offended us, been unkind, or even deliberately cruel, and we disagree with them, how easy it is to fall into the old devil belief and say (to ourselves at least), "To blazes with them!" But when we do this, are we not saying they are unworthy of our love, and God's love?

Me, forgive?

There was a time when I felt very uncomfortable with the concept of my forgiving others' sins.
We may live with ourselves, but we don't live for ourselves—or at least we shouldn't.

Love knows no barriers

After World War II, I was involved with aid to individuals in countries that had been devastated by warfare.
While growing up I saw much evidence of racial prejudice.

Holding God's hand

One afternoon Brendan was supposed to take a nap, but when he put his head down on the pillow, his ear hurt and he started to cry.

Lean a little harder

When I was in high school, I was very much in need of a summer job.

The logic of spirituality

Once when I was still a teen-ager, I had a fever blister developing on my lip—a minor ailment that is generally supposed to have a course to run.
A friend of mine was on an airplane once when the pilot warned the passengers to be prepared for turbulence due to a violent storm.
