God never stops loving you

If you are going through an experience that makes you think God has forgotten you, pause and consider this: God, the architect and author of all that really exists, is divine Love. He wields all power and fills all space. In your true identity you are God's, Spirit's, perfect offspring—the loved of Love.

God is also divine Mind, the all-acting, all-knowing creator. It would be impossible for eternal Mind to forget, even for an instant, its spiritual offspring, its own likeness. An Old Testament prophet proclaims: "Now, O Lord, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand." Isa. 64:8. And, speaking of the Science she discovered, Mrs. Eddy writes: "Christian Science is based on the facts of Spirit and its forms and representations, but these facts are the direct antipodes of the so-called facts of matter; and the eternal verities of Spirit assert themselves over their opposite, or matter, in the final destruction of all that is unlike Spirit." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 55.

An experience of mine shows how divine Love takes the initiative in asserting its dominion. When I served in the United States Army a number of years ago, regulations required my unit to spend one week of each month camping out. In northern Italy, where we were stationed, the Alpine scenery was beautiful beyond description, but that winter happened to be one of the coldest in many years. The long drive to our campground, along the zigzag mountain roads, was arduous. Vehicles and equipment required extra maintenance. Food turned ice-cold a few seconds after being served. To make matters worse, I contracted a heavy cold. During that winter I virtually forgot about God. And if anyone had asked me, I would probably have said that God had forgotten about me.

This feeling of desolation lingered until early spring. At that time I went on leave and did some leisurely sightseeing in Switzerland. One sunny day the truths I had learned in Christian Science, and cherished for so many years, began coming back to me. It seemed I was walking out of a dismal cave into the sunshine of God's love. The mist dispersed; the bad dream broke; I was healed. Divine Truth, the Truth shown forth in the unparalleled life of Christ Jesus, was asserting its right of dominion, its right to be recognized in the human realm. Once again I saw clearly that God is all-acting—our creator and preserver—and that He loves every one of His children equally. A statement from Mrs. Eddy's book Science and Health came to thought: "Trials teach mortals not to lean on a material staff,—a broken reed, which pierces the heart. ... Trials are proofs of God's care." Science and Health, p. 66. And I saw a deeper meaning in some lines from one of Mrs. Eddy's poems, in which she is addressing God, the great Shepherd:

I will listen for Thy voice,
Lest my footsteps stray;
I will follow and rejoice
All the rugged way. Poems, p. 14 .

In the ensuing months I loved and trusted God more than I ever had before that winter. I drew nearer to Him because I saw that He had always been with me, sustaining me. There was no ruminating about why I'd briefly forgotten God; there was just gratitude to be aware once again of His constant care. During the remainder of my Army experience, I felt a greater sense of freedom, and higher goals came into view.

Let the spiritual facts, the truths of God and His perfect man, assert themselves in your experience. They have the authority of divine law behind them. They conquer and obliterate false beliefs that depict man as the descendant of Adam, as material and mortal. No one has to remain a prisoner of the Adam-dream, crawling around inside the perimeter of some nagging problem. Anyone can break out by waking up to the spiritual facts of his true identity as God's beloved child.
