A prevalent assumption is that we are all subject to aging and that this causes our body to deteriorate. This so-called law of aging is one of the most pernicious of the material laws referred to and refuted in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Science and Health says, for instance, “Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God” (pp. 380–381). 

This corresponds with the Scriptures, which tell us that God is Spirit and that we are made in His image and likeness. So we are not one whit material and thus not subject to supposed laws relating to matter.

In prayer, we can declare this emphatically—that “laws” of aging and decay are made null and void by the law of God, infinite Mind. As divine Mind’s ideas, which are governed by God’s law, we are not subject to aging or deterioration any more than are numbers in mathematics. The number seven couldn’t, after much use, somehow get worn down to 6.875. Science and Health states, “Man in Science is neither young nor old” (p. 244).

Early last year, there was much discussion about knee surgery among my friends and acquaintances. I silently refuted these claims of knee problems as not part of their being or mine. One morning, however, I awoke with great pain in one of my knees. Walking was difficult. I held in prayer to the thought that my movement is based on Mind’s direction and Spirit’s strength. After a few days, still not walking freely, I called a Christian Science practitioner for metaphysical treatment. We prayed with many spiritual truths found in the Bible and Science and Health. 

After a week or so, the pain had decreased, and I felt comfortable continuing to pray on my own. One thing I needed was to be firm in my prayers. Mrs. Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, “Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him” (Science and Health, p. 421). Knowing that Mrs. Eddy chose her words very carefully, I looked up vehemently; synonyms include emphatically, vigorously, forcefully, and fervently.

Staying with this line of thought and insisting vehemently that nothing can oppose the power of God, who is Truth and Love, and that I am able to express my God-given dominion, I was completely healed. While it took some months, I am very grateful that God, good, enables us to stay with the truth and assures us that His will is done. Truth is always victorious.
