Enriching the affections
Continually practicing unselfed love, which is true prayer, forwards our spiritual progress.
The demands of daily life necessitate steadfast prayer. Under the title “Daily Prayer,” the Manual of The Mother Church provides this By-Law for the guidance of members of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston: “It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: ‘Thy kingdom come;’ let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 41).
Praying this “Daily Prayer” grounds our thinking in divine Truth throughout the day, reminding us of our inseparable relationship to God, Spirit. It prompts us to know that Spirit, divine Love, created us and blesses us and that because we are Spirit’s offspring, our true nature is spiritual and eternal. This prayer urges us to acknowledge that God—Truth, Life, and Love—governs the whole universe, including each one of us, and to reject unspiritual thinking and behavior. If any evil appears in our experience, we can resist and overcome it by yielding to the absolute rule of God’s goodness.
I turned to divine Love for the words to spark this man’s connection with his spiritual selfhood.
