Life
The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
“The Lord liveth” contrasts Yahweh with lifeless idols. Moses also employs the rock metaphor in making this point: “Their rock is not as our Rock” (Deuteronomy 32:31).
Jews called Yahweh “the living God”—the God who both constitutes and gives life (see Psalms 84:2, for instance). And those testifying to the truth of something used the oath “as the Lord liveth” (see examples in I Samuel 19:4–6; II Kings 2:1, 2).
