‘Taking the time to listen to his voice’
The Gospel of Mark records that when a certain widow cast two mites into the treasury, it won Christ Jesus’ commendation: “This poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had” (12:43, 44).
And so it is that we are bidden to give of our want. This want is not necessarily financial, but is now more often in terms of that scarce commodity in the present era: time. The time to devote reverent and undistracted attention to God through quiet prayer.
The human mind tends to be restless and easily distracted by materiality—to be resistant to the discipline of quiet, undisturbed thinking. And this problem has been exacerbated by the proliferation and accessibility of technology in modern society.
