A simple prayer and a family blessing
When I was growing up, my mom had a drinking problem. She worked and successfully supported two little children after becoming a widow, but she drank to relieve the pressure.
Mom was a warm, loving, generous mother when she wasn’t drinking. However, drinking made her increasingly frustrated; our home environment became difficult. The drinking problem appeared to be hereditary. My grandfather had been an alcoholic and had passed on from an alcohol-related illness.
When I was an adult, my relationship with my mother improved, but family gatherings always centered around alcohol. By this time, I’d found Christian Science, and I loved what I was learning about God and God’s creation—the fact that He saw everything He had made and beheld it as very good (see Genesis 1).
