‘Without spot’
Over two years ago, our daughter was sent home from day care because of the appearance of spots on her skin. The condition seemed to quickly escalate into symptoms I have seen described as ringworm or a similar type of skin infection. My wife and I were confronted with fears of this condition being contagious. We sought support from a Christian Science practitioner to handle these aggressive beliefs and calm our thoughts; and we kept our daughter home from day care.
We began to work with the scriptural concept of the “whole armour of God” (Ephesians 6:11). The practitioner was quick to support us and affirmed our daughter’s heavenly protection. Instead of seeing her as a defenseless mortal in an environment that could put her into contact with impurities, the truth was that our daughter’s health and harmony were not the products of mortal conditions and variables.
At the root of this claim was the belief that our daughter was a material being and, as such, subject to material laws and timetables. But the practitioner assured us that our dear girl was innocent and “without spot, and blameless” as we read in Second Peter 3:14. Building on this concept of innocence, the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, brought us comfort: “A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive. The new idea, conceived and born of Truth and Love, is clad in white garments” (p. 463). These words affirmed the safety of our daughter’s being on the basis that she is a spiritual idea, a direct expression of pure Truth and Love.
