Fatigue on trip replaced by endurance
During my last college semester, I was one of several students selected to travel to India and Nepal for a study abroad program.
When going to a different country, some worry about safety, food, or weather, but I didn’t feel worried about any of those things. I got used to the food really well, I embraced the intense heat of India and the cold nights of Nepal, and I felt safe in the crowded streets of Udaipur as well as in the tall mountains of Katmandu. But there was one thing that I was worried about. Exercising.
I had never considered myself to be a particularly sporty or active person. If I had to choose between using the stairs or the escalator, with no doubt in my mind, I chose the escalator. In school, when late for classes, I would run for less than five minutes, and I would feel completely winded. And so I was afraid that I would not be able to do all the necessary trekking to remote villages in Nepal. I was afraid of fatigue and inability to walk for many hours.
