Overcoming contagion

Originally written in Spanish, this testimony first appeared in the May 2014 French, Spanish, German, and Portuguese editions of The Herald of Christian Science.

One morning my younger daughter woke up with a very sore throat and pain in part of her face. When I went to school with her older sister to explain to the teacher why my younger daughter wouldn’t attend class that day, I learned that there had been a mumps outbreak at the school. The teacher said that a certificate from a doctor stating that the child was healthy would be necessary for her to return to class.

On my way home, I started to pray. Prayer is a way to recognize our unity with God, acknowledging who God is and what we are to Him. In prayer I acknowledged God’s presence and power governing all. As God is All-in-all, and He is Spirit, all His creation has to be spiritual. And because man is the son of God, we are spiritual, not material. We are not made up of material elements but include all right, spiritual, and perfect ideas.

Very soon the question “Is this sickness caused by a law of God?” came to me. The answer was a resounding “No!” In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy says that children are “the spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love” (p. 582). I reasoned that since God is Love itself, He would never create a law that children should be sick. This truth comforted me because it confirmed for me that disease is not God’s law for any of His children.
