No desire to smoke anymore

Originally written in Spanish, this testimony first appeared in the February 2014 Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese editions of The Herald of Christian Science.

I’d had several physical healings in Christian Science, but for many years I was unable to quit smoking. Whenever I tried to quit, my desire to smoke would increase. At one point, I was smoking nearly two packs of cigarettes a day. I was so enslaved and oppressed by this habit that if I ran out of cigarettes in the middle of the night, I would need to go out and buy more.

One day I decided to pray specifically to be free of this habit. I began searching the Bible for passages with words that related to the concept of “freedom.” One helpful verse was, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1). I also found this passage: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18).

I also read what Mary Baker Eddy wrote on the subject of freedom in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. For example, she indicates that to break free from addictions, we must “… meet and destroy these errors with the truth of being …” and be convinced that “there is no real pleasure in false appetites” (p. 404). I realized that as God’s child, I’m spiritual and perfect, and can be attracted only to good.
