A safe journey
Sandy Colvard
As full time RV (recreational vehicle) travelers for over 15 years, “home” is where my husband and I park, and rarely are there Christian Science churches in these locations. Words aren’t adequate to express my gratitude for the online church services available wherever there is Internet access. Although the church in Park City, Utah, has thoughtfully shared their Wednesday readings to an extended family through e-mail for many years, the first time I was able to join a broadcast from The Mother Church, I shed tears of joy—it felt like I had truly come “home.”
A recent Arctic weather event that moved across country caught us while we were farther north than we would have liked to have been under those conditions. When the harsh weather took a break for a short while, we were able to move from Idaho to New Mexico on clear highways and with no adverse effects from the extreme cold. At one point during our trip, it looked like conditions were going to deteriorate. I have always found “road time” a good opportunity to pray, and in this instance, a reference from Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures came to thought: “Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God” (p. 254
).
I’d prayed with this reference before, but this time, I really focused on what it means to be a “guest of God.” A good host always provides for every need of his guests in terms of comfort, a safe haven, adequate provision, guidance, and abundant hospitality. In this instance, not only were my husband and I the beneficiaries of our host, God’s ample outpouring of good, but every other traveler on the road was included as well. The anxiety I had been feeling gave way to a wonderful sense of God’s divine presence and everyone’s inclusion in that constant care. The severe weather that had looked so ominous never materialized, and we completed that leg of our journey without interruption.
