Protected when my car tumbled
After spending a few glorious days in Bryce Canyon in southern Utah, I was heading south to join a river rafting expedition in the Grand Canyon.
The top was down on my convertible, and I was listening to the Christian Science Bible Lesson on the CD player. Its message was that God is wholly good and more powerful than any evil influence or hypnotic suggestion that would try to manipulate or disturb our thoughts.
About 12 miles down the road, I was momentarily distracted. When I looked up, my car was heading toward a roadside reflector light. I swerved to avoid it but overcorrected, and then the car slid on gravel. It did a 180-degree turn and landed on the shoulder on the opposite side of the road. From there, the car began to tumble down an embankment.
