A swift response

I'm certainly no economist. But it's becoming clearer that the financial world is one of heightened interconnectivity. What happens overnight to influence stock markets on the other side of the planet can have huge implications for how the markets in my country will behave before the sun has barely started shining. More than once lately, an apparently disconnected international news event has quickly driven up the cost of a barrel of oil and a gallon of gas.

Recently there's been much talk about the American mortgage lending crisis and its potential to create not just a national but a worldwide economic recession. And when we looked at the growing list of fears and concerns swirling around this discussion, threatening people both at home and abroad, our staff felt it was necessary to work fast to bring out this issue of the Sentinel. One of the important activities of this magazine is to identify issues at the center of current public thought, and to offer constructive ideas on how readers can pray about growing world fears, for the benefit of one and all.

You may be asking, "Can I really pray about something as vast as the economy?" If so, read on. You'll meet several people, including a chief financial officer and an expert in the mortgage and housing industry, who aren't at all shy about answering, "Yes!" Their examples show the vital contribution that our collective spiritualized thinking can bring to the marketplace.
