In January 1997 it rained a lot in São Paulo, and the streets in many areas of the city were flooded. Because of an outbreak of leptospirosis that was connected with polluted water, the media began to disseminate descriptions of the disease's symptoms, as well as the precautions and care that should be taken.

At that time, I used to spend a great part of my Wednesdays in the Christian Science branch church I attend, because I served in the Reading Room, which was located in our church building. After serving, I would stay on for the evening testimony meetings. One Wednesday, before going to church, I had to go to the downtown post office, to an area that had been very affected by the flooding.
