A FAMILY PRAYS FOR HEALING

While still living in South Africa, we received a message that our elder son, a chef, had been burned by an exploding propane stove. The law governing injury while on duty required that he see a doctor, and he was taken to hospital. It's always been a given in our family that when there's a need, we pray for each other—and I immediately began to pray that nothing could interfere with God's perfect plan.

Prior to that time, our daughter had moved from home. It was a traumatic time for me, and I'd been struggling with the "empty nest syndrome." Determined not to feel this way again, as our son was considering a position in the United States, I had been studying the Bible story of Hagar and taking comfort in its message. Despite Hagar's fear for her son, an angel told Hagar that God had heard the voice of her son and was with him (see Gen. 21:14–20). The story was helping me realize I could trust God to guide my own children and to be with them continuously. And I now saw that I could put these same truths into practice in this situation, gaining peace and assurance that our son would hear the healing messages he needed directly from God.
