'God is working His purpose out'
"To discover your purpose in life you must turn to God's Word, not the world's wisdom."
That's an observation from the opening chapter of Rick Warren's book The Purpose-Driven Life, which in recent years has outsold even the Harry Potter books. Warren's book played a role in a hostage drama last month in Atlanta, Georgia, in which a young mother talked down an alleged killer by reading inspirational passages to him from the book.
Statistics suggest that in the world today people of many different religious persuasions are clamoring to learn more about God's purpose for them. They are persuaded that "God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year," and that the time is coming when the earth will be "filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 82).
