people tell their stories

Seasonal colds and flu subsided

For years, I had been bothered fairly regularly by colds and flu. When I was young, this sometimes included ear infections. From a young age, I went to a Christian Science Sunday School and learned about my relationship to God — a God who loved all of His children dearly and gave us only what was good. In class we talked about what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God, to see ourselves as His perfect children, and how to heal through prayer.

One night, with an all too familiar pain in my ear, some of what I was learning in Sunday School came together for me. It roused me to contest the pain through God's power. I thought how God couldn't possibly be giving me this pain. In fact, God was with me right then — loving me and protecting me from disease. I felt my fear and helplessness give way as I prayed. And my ear was healed right then. That marked the last time I had to deal with an ear infection.

However, when I was an adult with a young family, colds and flu seemed to be coming with greater frequency. Although it was rare that I was incapacitated, those bouts were still a hindrance.
