Constant vigilance
Two US Army reservists describe how they took God with them into nuclear-biological-chemical (NBC) training.
How Do You Scare People —just a little!—into vigilance, yet reassure them in the same breath? How do you give them insights into NBC warfare without leaving them quaking in their boots about gases, poisoning, radiation, or whatever?
That was the challenge faced by Dick Beck, who served in the US Army Reserves for 21 years, three of which were spent teaching the brigade how to protect themselves from these forms of warfare.
"There I was," Dick told us, "spending hour after hour in bare classrooms and special chambers, creating experimental puffs of smoke or releasing tear gas to show the troops how to deal with certain aspects of NBC warfare.
