What's really going on at school?

SOMETIMES we think we're only going to school to absorb what the teachers tell us and to get through the day as painlessly as possible. But we have an opportunity to do and to get a lot more than that.

A girlfriend and I were assigned to the same teacher for Spanish I. This teacher had a reputation for being mean, and no one wanted to be in her class. But my friend and I were also members of the same Sunday School class. Slowly, and with some fear, we walked together to the new classroom. When we arrived, I swung the door open wide and just stood there. My friend asked me what I was doing, and I said, "I'm letting God in the room first." She corrected me a little by saying, "No, He's already in there!" We laughed, and our fear was gone. We both felt the presence of God, divine Love, with us and with everyone. In the first few moments of class, we smiled at the teacher and she smiled back. My friend and I still remember that she became our favorite teacher.

It's God's nature to love, and man, as His image and likeness, naturally expresses love. Of course, this expression includes more than simply smiling at someone or being superficially nice. It is feeling true brotherly love and kindness toward all, whether it's a school chum or a grocery store clerk or people you pass on the street. To be loving is natural to us, because we are, in truth the likeness of God, Love.
