The redundancy of time: an astrophysicist's view

Dr. Laurance Doyle, who works with the NASA Ames Research Center in Palo Alto, California, talked with Scott Laningham.

Scott Laningham: As time passes, we've got to wonder what exactly it is we're measuring year after year and how significant it is in the greater scheme of things.

Laurance Doyle: Basically, what we're measuring is the orbit of the earth around the sun. Any time matter repeats itself, you've got a clock—whether it's the hands of a watch going around or a planet orbiting the sun. Time is a finite concept. Matter being redundant is what time is.
