A marine, reminded of spiritual things
When a young friend who had been a student in a Christian Science Sunday School was about to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, he asked a fellow church member to give a talk at the ceremony. She says, "Before receiving his commission, [he] wanted to be reminded of the spiritual sense of things. He wanted to be reminded that God is in control." What follows is excerpts from that talk.
Beyond ethics, or perhaps in support of ethics, wisdom sets forth some virtues that indicate the kind of person men and women should strive to become.
The first of these is humility. Humility involves seeing yourself as whole, as one; not superior or inferior to another. It is in fact simply seeing yourself as God sees you—spiritual, individual, not in comparison to or in competition with anyone else.
