Several friends of mine wistfully long to see in our schools more active emphasis on the teaching of solid reading, writing, and arithmetic. "Back to the basics" is their theme. A recent experience in another context has given "Back to the basics!" greater and more personal meaning to me.
One night I woke out of deep sleep with acute leg cramps and I could not get out of bed. I tried to think of truths that would help me, but I found I couldn't. I thought of calling a Christian Scientist friend to help me pray, but I simply wasn't able to reach the telephone, although it was only a few feet away.
I knew I was going to have to pray on my own in spite of the pain. Though my thoughts weren't very coherent, let alone inspired, I realized that I could at least begin with I knew of God. I started by remembering, as completely as I could, the creation story in the book of Genesis. There was comfort, I discovered, in the very first words: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (1:1). I was able to understand that whatever God created, me included, had to reflect Him since He is All-in-all.
