Shortly after my husband and I became acquainted with Christian Science, it was banned in the former German Democratic Republic. Then the Bible and Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy were all we had. Our understanding of Christian Science hadn't as yet matured to the point where we knew how to solve all our problems through prayer. We lacked practical guidance from, and conversations with, experienced Christian Scientists, as well as the support of The Herald of Christian Science and the Christian Science Quarterly.
And so it came about that in 1966 I fell ill with a severe case of angina pectoris, irregular heartbeat, and high blood pressure. Later I was told I had a high cholesterol level. According to my doctor's statements, all these physical disturbances were incurable, and could only be alleviated or held within bounds by medication. She told me I would never be able to get along again without specific medicine.
In late 1990 we noticed a report in our daily newspaper about a Christian Science youth meeting in Hamburg. The writer of the report, who had accompanied the young people from Magdeburg, lived in our town. We contacted her and received much instructive explanation about Christian Science, as well as books by and about Mrs. Eddy. With our friend's help we were able to subscribe to the Quarterly and Herald. Above all, however, we learned that Magdeburg now had a Christian Science Society again. The first church service we attended was a great joy for us.
