Disasters are not inevitable
Sometimes it seems as though the news of disasters—of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, uncontrollable floods—is constant. Such reports may persuade us that individuals can feel secure one minute but totally insecure the next.
After experiencing a devastating earthquake years ago, I realized that I needed a better understanding of God. Only this would allay my fears of "sudden" disasters, especially those brought on by forces of nature over which there seems to be no control. I went to the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings to gain a much deeper understanding of where God is in times of trouble. I really wanted to feel His nearness.
From this study I learned that God is ever-present good, never causing disasters of any kind. He is the only real presence. As the book of Psalms in the Bible tells us, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (46:1).
