Proving the fullness of man

When I was a young student of Christian Science starting a new business, I faced some frightening and difficult circumstances. I had just moved my family to a new city and literally had to start from scratch. The expenses accumulated faster than the income I had hoped for. As each bill arrived, I dropped it in a special drawer of my used desk with the intention of paying it when due. Somehow I managed to do so, but whenever I wrote a check to cover some expense, my signature just seemed to verify a continuous depletion of my limited supply. It soon became clear that my whole trend of thinking had to be reversed.

I had experienced many physical healings through Christian Science and felt confident that financial problems could also be solved through prayer and a deeper understanding of God. The Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings had already become my established guides for praying correctly, and so it was natural for me to turn to these books in this situation.

The first chapter of Genesis reminded me that man, in God's image, expresses infinite good. Then I found this statement of Mrs. Eddy's in Science and Health: "Think less of material conditions and more of spiritual" (p. 419). I didn't see how this message could solve my financial problems. But it kept coming back to me, so I made a copy of it and pasted it inside my "bill drawer" where I couldn't miss it.
