One afternoon while I was in high school, I slipped and fell down a flight of concrete stairs. I remember feeling extreme pain in both legs and immediately repeating "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which begins: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."

It was the end of the school day, and I was on the way to my father's office, where I worked. I continued praying to know that matter was not substance and that my true nature as the spiritual idea of God was whole, perfect, and unfallen. Although the pain had not stopped, I walked to my car and drove to work.

I was limping as I entered the office, and the woman with whom I worked noticed and asked me what had happened. I told her I had fallen but that I was OK. She knew that I was a Christian Scientist but was concerned. She asked to see my leg. After repeated requests I finally showed it to her, though I knew the material picture was not an accurate reflection of my true substance. A horrified expression appeared on her face. I assured her that I was all right and that there was no need for concern.
