In January 1989, while I was at the beach, I felt that a condition I had been suffering from for several weeks was becoming more serious. I began to suffer from such intense pain that I asked my wife to look for a doctor. Consultation with a doctor resulted in hospitalization. The doctors urgently recommended that I submit to a gallbladder operation. I rejected the idea, although, to be honest, more out of fear of the operation itself than as a result of what I had learned through my study of Christian Science.

I decided to consult with other doctors, among them a close friend. The verdict was unanimous. I should have the operation since my gallbladder had suffered irreversible damage.

At this point, on the advice of my wife, I took the step I should have taken right at the beginning. I turned to the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, who with much kindness led me confidently to the understanding of God's tender love for His children and to reliance on that love.
