NOT JUST THE HEAD, BUT THE HEART

Learning that Love is the only power

Computers, space shuttles, and nuclear reactors rank high among the symbols of our technological era. They are sometimes referred to in military parlance as "hardware," and that term captures the sharp-edged, cold calculation that is often associated with technology. Such inventions can seem more of the head than of the heart. So as society faces the challenges growing out of technological development, we may be tempted to feel that the things of the heart and of the Spirit—love, prayer, spiritual intuition—are irrelevant. The following interview with nuclear engineer Dr. Gerald Golden offers a different view of the importance of spiritual understanding and prayer in the midst of the realm of technology.

Dr. Golden, a Christian Scientist, has been involved in the operation of a unique experimental breeder reactor that was put through rigorous safety tests in the spring of 1986. He has worked in nuclear engineering for nearly thirty years, mostly in the area of reactor safety. In this Profile he describes some of the lessons he has learned. Dr. Rosalie E. Dunbar, a Christian Scientist, who has written articles and reviewed books on such issues as nuclear energy, interviewed Dr. Golden.

Dr. Golden, how did you approach the 1986 tests?
