In March 1985, the company for which I had worked for many years was dissolved because of a merger. I received a termination package, which included an option for a lump sum distribution of my retirement earnings. However, to qualify for the lump sum distribution (instead of receiving a monthly payment), I was required to take a thorough medical examination. The exam would include a stress EKG—a process which involved exercise while my heart rate and related functions were monitored and tested.
When I first learned of this requirement, I was struck with fear. Some time earlier I had developed apparent heart trouble. Climbing stairs had become difficult, and there was an uncomfortable shortness of breath. Now I realized the importance of accepting the challenge to work this out through the prayerful study of Christian Science. I knew the difficulty could be healed through a greater understanding of my true spiritual selfhood as the child of God.
I called a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer, but I was an active participant in the healing work. My study of Mrs. Eddy's writings led me to many powerful statements of spiritual truth concerning my real being and my inseparable relationship to God.
