During my youth I had close relationships with my grandmother, an aunt, and a dear friend. Their examples steered me toward becoming a Christian Scientist. Soon after we married, my husband and I became active members of a branch church and The Mother Church. In our early years together there were many blessings in raising a large family, as we learned to place our reliance firmly on God.

The following is a more recent healing. At one time we were traveling in Europe, driving a rented car in company with another couple. During the trip a lump appeared at the base of my husband's neck in the back. It was painful at first and there was some discharge. Each morning and evening we applied a fresh bandage.

My husband and I daily denied that this error, or any other form of evil, had power to harm man or separate him from God. We knew my husband's true nature to be perfect and spiritual. We affirmed that in reality he was "hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3). The pain was met quickly. This statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy was helpful to us (p. 451): "If our hopes and affections are spiritual, they come from above, not from beneath, and they bear as of old the fruits of the Spirit." We felt the support of our daily study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. We were fighting "the good fight of faith" (I Tim. 6:12), and we felt we were winning.
