Paul tells us plainly in his first letter to the Thessalonians that to give thanks in everything "is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (I Thess. 5:18). In praying to understand how better I might glorify God, I was awakened to a desire to share more fully my gratitude for at least some of what the study of Christian Science has brought into my experience.

One healing that has strengthened my faith over the years took place when I was a child of nine or ten. Our family had relied on God through prayer for healing for three generations, so there was no reluctance to turn to God in this instance. I recall clearly the event. My mother and grandmother had left for the Wednesday testimony meeting of our branch church, and I was outside playing with other children. I was carrying a boy about five years old on my back when I stumbled and fell hard. He was not hurt, but the weight of both of us came down on my arm, which I had put out to break the fall. The pain was extreme, and I recall running into our house where my father, who was not a Christian Scientist, tried to comfort me.

Soon after, my mother and grandmother returned from church. They talked to me and prayed for me, and although I do not recall any specific words or truths they spoke, I do know I was able to fall asleep that night. The next morning there was no more pain; I was able to move about with the arm in a homemade sling. My grandmother, who lived with us at the time and was a Christian Science practitioner, continued to pray for me. Over the weekend the bone returned to its normal position. Feeling completely free, I was able to return to school on Monday with full use of the arm. I had no further problems with it.
