One day about four years ago I noticed what...
One day about four years ago I noticed what looked like an insect bite on the instep of my foot. A few days later the spot was inflamed. After washing the foot thoroughly, I applied a small bandage to keep it clean. It never occurred to me then that even a little error is just as great a denial of God's all-good universe as a more impressive evil—and just as important to refute. This fact was soon evident when the sore did not heal.
By this time I knew I'd better identify myself with Spirit—that is, acknowledge my innate spirituality as God's child. I affirmed that I was subject only to God's goodness, and that poison has no place or power in Love's creation. I concluded by rejoicing that man's purity and innocence are intact and cannot be invaded. I kept my thought on these scientifically spiritual truths of God and man, but all the while caring for the wound.
During the next few weeks I continued applying larger and larger bandages. By then I could fit into only one particular pair of shoes, and standing and walking were uncomfortable. At that point I became fearful. So I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner and requested help through prayer. The practitioner asked, "Are you ready to stop looking at the foot?" This question made me realize I'd been hypnotized by the material evidence. But to stop looking at the foot seemed impossible because proper physical care was necessary. However, I reasoned that the practitioner meant I should refuse to see the discordant condition as real or as having power.
