While I was skiing with a friend, I took a fall near the top of a slope. Instead of trying to get up, I lay in the snow and prayed, reasoning with "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It begins (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." My partner came to me, put me on his back, and skied to the bottom of the slope. It was apparent that my leg was broken, but I was not in pain. When I arrived home late that night, I called a Christian Science practitioner, who said he would pray for me.
For five days I lay in bed studying the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. From time to time I called the practitioner, who reminded me that spiritual man cannot fall from God's care. I knew this was a true statement, but I did not understand how it applied to me. Finally, I saw that true activity emanates from divine Mind. I made a list of all the spiritual qualities that I had consciously expressed that day on the ski slopes. Expressing God-derived qualities was my real purpose and activity. And the activity of Mind can only bless; it never brings harm.
During this time I did my best to remain still, but there was a need to rise daily. Each time I moved, it was again apparent that the leg was broken. Because it seemed that a cast might perform the function of holding the leg in place, an appointment was made with a general physician.
