On one occasion, when I was ten years old, an earache made me delirious. At the time, I kept thinking of some of the things I'd learned in the Christian Science Sunday School. They reminded me that all is well despite appearances to the contrary and that there is no inside or outside to God's universe. Soon the delirium and earache were gone, and warts that had been on my hands for some years disappeared, too. My mother later told me that a Christian Science practitioner had been called to pray in my behalf. This was the first healing in Christian Science I can remember.
Disease is always an effect of a circumscribed knowledge of God. The action of the Christ, lifting thought to a more scientific basis, replaces these mortal misconceptions with spiritual perception. And once these false beliefs are corrected, disease is necessarily erased from the body.
One time, there was a diseased skin condition on one of my feet that persisted for about three years. The healing of this condition began while I was vacationing with my family at Lake Tahoe in Nevada. This lake is unusually clear, and it reminded me that man's true nature is also unblemished and bright. As I pondered this further, it became apparent to me that I needed to be more willing to see and actually receive the good that comes from God. I recognized how sullen I had been over the last several years and how that attitude had darkened and limited my outlook on life. I began to be obedient to this divine awakening and steadily realized more and more of what it is to be God's expression. The result was that I felt freer and happier, and so it wasn't surprising when, very soon, the diseased skin condition cleared up entirely.
