Finding freedom from a limited sense of self

Christian Science can show us how to progressively free ourselves from bondage to the limited, discord-producing sense of man as mortal. The prophet Isaiah must have glimpsed this possibility, for he wrote, "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?" Isa. 2:22;

The Bible teaches that God is Spirit, and man is created in Spirit's image and likeness. In God's sight, then, man is not an incomplete mortal plagued by disease, limitation, and unfulfilled yearnings. This falsity must be consciously repudiated because actually man lives in God and expresses the boundless freedom and unchanging harmony of the divine nature. His identity, or spiritual embodiment, images the completeness, the satisfied wholeness, of the one creative Ego whom he reflects.

The physical sense of man is an illusion, a figment of mortal thought somewhat similar to the seeming identity we encounter in a dream. Study of Mrs. Eddy's writings reveals this false view of identity to be the very basis of disease and limitation, and an awakening to man's spiritual selfhood in and of God brings healing and progress. Prayerful recognition of God as the Life, substance, and intelligence of man uplifts thought into a sense of harmony, peace, and contentment unknown before.
