As a child, I was examined by a doctor who diagnosed a condition of chronic appendicitis. He said that eventually I would have to have my appendix removed if I wanted to avoid any further attacks.

I did not want to have the operation. My mother was just beginning to have an interest in Christian Science, and she had been healed of a physical difficulty after only one visit to a practitioner of this Science. I began reading copies of the Sentinel, which we had in our home.

The next time I began suffering from this condition I decided to have the help of a practitioner rather than go to a doctor. I continued to rely only on Christian Science to heal this condition, and after nearly two years the healing was complete. By that time I was a student in the Christian Science Sunday School, and I was sure I had found the religion I had been looking for.
