Dealing with the Population Explosion

Many experts believe that the world today is threatened by a population explosion that could end in the disaster of malnutrition and starvation for millions of people. This predicted increase in population could lead to great inequities in the distribution of food and goods, it is said. Whatever steps can be taken to lessen or avert this problem should, of course, be taken. Such steps may include an extension of the "green revolution" or a reorganization of international economics and trade.

Christian Science can help bring about necessary resolutions by showing what is at the root of the problem—the belief that man is a corporeal self-perpetuating person capable of generating offspring in numbers far beyond the capacity of the world's farmers and the world's land to sustain. Scientifically speaking, this material conception of creation and multiplication is based on a tremendous mistake. The only real man is the man divine Love creates and cares for. Man is entirely spiritual. He is the perfect, intelligent, incorporeal offspring of Mind.

Christian Science is the Science of Life. God is divine and eternal Life, and Life expresses itself in the creating of ideas. These ideas are purely spiritual. In Science it is the idea of Life, not a corporeal mortal, that is termed man. Life, the origin of all ideas, totally controls the multiplication of those ideas. This is implied by the writer of Genesis, who states of God's creation, man: "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." Gen. 1:28;
