When I was in my last year of high school and ice-skating with...

When I was in my last year of high school and ice-skating with friends at a northern rink, I was accidentally knocked down by a fast skater. I immediately started applying some of the truths I had been taught all my life, such as "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as well as her answer to the question, "What is man?" The first statement includes the words (p. 468), "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness." The answer to the question "What is man?" states (p. 475), "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique." It was clear to me that man is made in the image and likeness of God. However, my right arm seemed useless, and my Sunday School teacher, a Christian Science practitioner, was called. Although I had no doubt that this healing would be made in Science, at another's request it seemed best to have a doctor check for broken bones. An X ray showed a fractured wrist. The doctor recommended a cast; however, he very kindly complied with my request to put just a light bandage on the wrist and my arm in a sling.

There was no special discomfort after the first night. The practitioner continued to pray for me, and every day after school I stopped at a Christian Science Reading Room for quiet study, placing emphasis on the week's Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly. No resentment about the experience was ever allowed to creep into my thought. By the end of three weeks I was using my hand in classes without the bandage or sling. The wrist was healed in half the time predicted by the doctor. I experienced no particular delay in classes due to the loss of use of my right hand. Also, I was able to attain very high shorthand and typing speeds the following year in secretarial school.

Both of my parents attended Christian Science Sunday School, as did my sister and I. I am very grateful to have been spared so many of the world's wrong beliefs and ills by being brought up in Christian Science. I am especially grateful for the loving help of practitioners, who have been so steadfast and generous with their time whenever I have needed treatment.
