A RECIPE FOR BEAUTY

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

Who that has spent time and effort attempting by material means to increase personal attractiveness would not welcome a simple recipe for beauty! How many have found that in spite of preoccupation with material aids to beauty or handsomeness there has still persisted a physical problem of unattractive appearance.

A recipe for beauty simple in its ingredients and sure in its results is available; and it is to be found on pages 247 and 248 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where Mary Baker Eddy says, "The recipe for beauty is to have less illusion and more Soul, to retreat from the belief of pain or pleasure in the body into the unchanging calm and glorious freedom of spiritual harmony."

The first ingredient of this recipe is unique; whereas most recipes say to take a certain amount of this and a certain amount of that, this recipe says first to have less of something —less illusion. Perhaps the most common illusion of which we are likely to have too much, and with which we may well dispense, is the illusion that matter is real and has power. When we turn to the Bible we learn that matter had its pretended beginning in a mist, and therefore is unreal. We read (Gen. 2:6, 7): "But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
