[Written for the Sentinel]

Petition

Lord, teach me how to pray, for I
Have just begun to find
The joy of loving Thee, and try
To utilize Thy law and power;
In sweet communion hour by hour
I feel the unity of Mind,—
Lord, teach me how to pray.

Lord, teach me that new tongue, for I
The language of true Soul would speak.
The Word of Life will purify,
Illumine, break the bond of sense,
Unfold the one intelligence
With patient love and accents meek,—
Lord, teach me that new tongue.

Lord, teach me how to sing thy praise,
For now I know Thy wondrous care.
I stand directly 'neath the rays
Of vibrant Truth, of Love divine.
My prayer, my speech, my soul are Thine,
Dear Lord, for Thou art everywhere,—
Lord, teach me how to praise.
