While visiting my home city about eleven years ago, I...

While visiting my home city about eleven years ago, I spent an evening with an old friend and her husband, who had become students of Christian Science since I had seen them last. They talked about this religion almost all the evening; I could not seem to keep them away from the subject, and I tried hard, not being at all interested in it. They invited me to go to church with them the following Sunday, and I did so to please the wife, for I was very fond of her. During the service they told me to look at the back of the church, and on doing so I saw about fifty men who had given up their seats to ladies that had come in after the church was filled, and the strange part of it to me then was that they looked so happy and contented. I was not much impressed with the service, but the faces of the people did impress me, for every one looked so happy and prosperous; and going back in the car I heard the conductor telling a man that he was glad when Sunday morning came, for he liked to carry the people that went to the Christian Science church, because no matter what happened or what the weather was, they were always cheerful about it.

The next week I went home, and I did not hear Christian Science mentioned or give it a thought except to think about how much better my friend looked. The following year I visited a friend who was not a Christian Scientist, but one day she told me of two people we both knew who had been healed by Science. I said there must be something in it, and proposed that we should go to their church on Sunday, which we did. I shall never forget how different the service seemed to me from what it had the year before; it seemed so peaceful. We were invited to go to the reading room sometime, so the very next day we went there. Before leaving I bought a Bible and a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and subscribed for the Quarterly and Sentinel for a year. The seed that had been planted the year before was just beginning to sprout. I began to read and study that night, and for a year read little else; no matter what I was doing Science and Health was open by my side most of the time. There were a good many statements in it that I did not understand, but from the first I felt that the time would come when they would be clear to me, and I am so grateful that I did not waste time worrying about them. After reading a short time I found that some ailments of twenty years' standing had disappeared. Severe headaches had gone, and I could walk along a crowded street and look up at the people without getting dizzy, which had not been possible for a number of years. Stomach and bowel trouble also went to their native nothingness, as also did rheumatism.

Every discordant condition that has come up since has been met and overcome by this truth that makes free, if properly applied. It has been my only physician for the past ten years. Before knowing of Christian Science I was a slave to medicine and doctors, but after talking to a practitioner I went right back to the house where I was visiting and threw out all my medicine. Some of the healings came very quickly, others more slowly, but these made me read and study the literature more faithfully.
