I feel that the time has come when I am able to give my testimony to the truth and healing power of Christian Science. It is over five years since I was first told of it by a relative who came to visit us and who had herself been greatly helped through Christian Science. We talked on the subject the whole of the first afternoon that she was here, and before evening I was thoroughly convinced that it was the truth for which I had been feebly groping for many years. For the next few days I read some of the books she had lent me until I could get some of my own. On the third day of her visit I had my first proof of the healing power of Christian Science in the following manner. It was bitterly cold weather and the ground was a sheet of ice. I was stepping hurriedly into the garden, when my foot slipped, doubled over, and was very badly injured. The sense of pain made me feel faint, and I remembered that once before I had been laid up for six weeks from the same cause. I, however, realized almost at once that Christian Science could help me, and hopping back into the room, I sat down and began to think over all that I had been told and had read in the last three days. My relative was in the room, and she helped me also. In seven minutes the worst part of the pain subsided, and in three more minutes I stood up, saying, "My foot is quite well." One hour later I went for a two-mile walk and felt no pain or discomfort whatever. The 11th and 12th verses of the 91st Psalm seemed to possess my thought the whole time I was out, and my feet were kept from slipping or stumbling again on those icy roads.
My gratitude and rejoicing over this proof of the healing power of divine Mind, and also for the sense of safety and protection which I experienced, were more than words can express. A day or two later my relative went away, and I continued to study by myself. Three weeks after this I was healed, through the reading of Science and Health, of a very serious internal trouble, which had kept me in almost incessant pain for nearly ten years, and for which I had always to wear a surgical appliance. The doctors had said that I would have to wear this appliance for the rest of my life, as whenever I tried to do without it the pain became intolerable. During the three weeks I had been trying to apply my small understanding of Christian Science to the overcoming of this difficulty, but the pain seemed worse than usual. I then wrote to make an appointment for present treatment from an experienced practitioner. The next day, however, as I was studying Science and Health, I suddenly realized that it was only my own want of faith and understanding which was hindering me from knowing that I was healed there and then. I put the book down, thought it over, and asked God to give me a clearer understanding of this truth. I then went to my room and removed the appliance, and the pain vanished. From that moment I was free! I was healed, and I have had no return of the suffering. At that time I was also liable to very bad attacks of throat trouble, which used to make me ill and weak for weeks at a time. This trouble has also practically vanished; very rarely now do I ever feel even a slight soreness, and I am able to overcome this in a very short time through my understanding of Christian Science. Sometimes my voice remains husky, but this causes no pain or distress as it did formerly, and I regain a normal tone much sooner. I know, too, that as I work on faithfully, this apparent weakness will vanish. I have also been freed from severe headaches, from which I used to suffer almost daily; and many other ailments which were a constant annoyance have disappeared.
On one occasion, when sitting with a friend in her bedroom, the front of a very heavy wardrobe fell forward, the full weight coming on my head, which was hit by the carving at the top. I just had time to declare mentally that evil could not harm me as the front fell. Two friends who were present raised it off me, expecting to find me stunned; but I was not hurt in the smallest degree. I felt just as well as if nothing had happened, and so intensely grateful and happy that such a proof of God's goodness should be given before these friends, who were not interested in Christian Science. On another occasion I was awakened in the middle of the night by the falling of a picture. The corner of the frame struck me close to the right eye, on the edge of the temple, and made a deep cut, which bled profusely; but in a few minutes, through the realization of God's presence and allness, the bleeding stopped, and the severe pain was allayed. In half an hour I was asleep again, and when I woke in the morning the swelling had nearly disappeared, the cut was healed over and looked only like a scratch, and in the afternoon of that day I was able to do some very fine lace-work without any distress to eye or head.
