Spiritual Meaning of the Scriptures Revealed

For over twenty years I had been afflicted with a discharge from one of my ears. It was very troublesome at times, particularly so if I took the least cold. It became chronic and I lost the hearing in that ear. During these years I had been treated by the best specialists in San Francisco, and underwent severe treatment. Various acids were used to burn out the cause of the trouble, and one physician frequently heated to a white heat an instrument that he applied in my ear. After undergoing all this, the cure was not effected, and I decided I could not be healed. I had a wash I used, which prevented any odor, but it was very embarrassing to me at times, to feel that others might notice my trouble, and then, people always seemed to choose my deaf ear to whisper or speak low in, and it often put me to great disadvantage.

In August, 1897, it was suggested that I try Christian Science. I decided the treatment could not harm me, and went to a Scientist. I stated my case to him; he gave me a treatment, also some tracts on the subject of Christian Science that he asked me to read, and to call again in two days. I attempted to read the tracts, but they did not enlighten me at all. I was not seeking light, but healing. I went to see the practitioner three times, but as my ear seemed worse than it had for a long time, and I did not grasp the spiritual meaning of what he said to me, I thought I had had about enough of Christian Science, and did not call for further treatment.

My ear seemed so much worse, I decided I did not want any more of Christian Science. I did not know at that time that error often screamed the loudest when being destroyed by Truth. This was the last of the trouble, and my ear has never discharged since.
