The Value of Science and Health
To-day , when feeling the need of something more satisfying than the selfish business thoughts which clamor for so much of the business man's time, a few words from the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," came to my mind, and this pure draught of Truth at once refreshed me. Then came some thoughts as to the value of this Book, which has brought so much of blessing, of joy, and of love into my otherwise selfishly barren life.
First, I tried to think of its value as a matter of dollars, and reasoned thus: Would the price of a copy of the best edition of Science and Health be considered for a moment in exchange for even this one statement of Truth, which had just been of such practical help to me? And without hesitation, the reply was, No; nor for any one of a hundred other such statements from that same book which God has given to me and to this age through the patient loving-kindness of our Mother. This gives some idea of its money value to me; but this money standard is wholly inadequate to express its real value.
Then came some thoughts as to its value on a higher plane as the "Key to the Scriptures:" how it had unlocked for me the great truths and brought to light the beauty of the Bible and given me back my childhood's love for, and faith in, and a practical understanding of, the teachings of Moses, the Prophets, and of our great Way-shower, Jesus the Christ. The value of our text-book to me as a Key to the Scriptures can only be fully appreciated by those who, like myself, were brought up by God-loving, Christian parents to believe in and to love the Bible, but who, through misunderstanding, or lack of understanding, had lost their faith in and love for that book, the true understanding of which, as brought to light in Christian Science, not only heals from sickness and sin, but when taken into our daily lives will lift us to a realization of that condition of which the Psalmist sang when he said, "I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness."
